Wuikinuxv Nation Energy Efficiency Initiative
Wuikinuxv Nation’s traditional territory extends from Koeye River to Cranston Point to the head of Owikeno Lake, on the central coast of British Columbia. The main community is located on the banks of the Waanukv River, which connects Owikeno Lake to the head of Rivers Inlet. There are 38 occupied homes in the community. Wuikinuxv is only accessible by boat or float plane.
Reducing Energy Costs – Wuikinuxv is an off-grid community, with no access to regional or provincial electricity grids. Electricity in the community is provided by a central diesel generator. Fuel for the diesel generator is shipped in from the Lower Mainland, resulting in electricity costs of $0.58/kWh – over five times more expensive than Zone I BC Hydro rates.
Supporting Community Renewable Energy Project – The community is also developing a run-of-river energy project to replace the diesel generator and provide its members with clean electricity. But the clean energy project will not supply enough electricity to fulfill the community’s energy needs at all times of the year, unless energy demand in the community is reduced.
