Métis Nation of Alberta

From November 2018 to September 2019 – and in partnership with Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC) and Métis Urban Housing Corporation (MUHC), wholly owned by Métis Nation of Alberta – Community Power conducted full energy assessments to 427 homes in and around Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Once all assessments were completed, a report was created that included an analysis of each home’s consumption, recommendations for retrofit upgrades, expected energy savings, and financial metrics:

  • Energy characteristics were measured and collected during an in-home assessment conducted by our Construction and Energy Specialist, which included blower door testing of the exterior envelope.
  • Energy saving opportunities were identified and a custom set of recommendations were generated for each home that included the cost of materials and labour for potential retrofits.
  • Characteristics identified in the assessment were used to develop a baseline model, which was then used to generate energy savings for the recommendations scoped for each home.
  • A financial analysis of recommendations was performed within relevant and cohesive categories so that work could be prioritized based on payback periods.

Community Power also retained and oversaw Fresco to conduct an ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit on six sample units within the Renaissance Tower – a 120,000 sq. ft., 90-unit seniors-friendly, barrier-free residential complex with commercial retail units located in Edmonton and owned by the Metis Capital Housing Corporation. Once completed, an assessment report of findings was compiled and issued, which was consolidated into the final overall report that was issued to MCHC and MUHC.

A Community Power assessor was paired with an MCHC employee to train them about energy assessments and how to conduct them. Team members also provided each homeowner with a custom brochure to help explain how simple behavioural changes could affect energy efficiency to help save money and make homes more comfortable.
